Vedic Period: An Overview for SSC CGL & UPSC Aspirants
The Vedic Period (1500 BCE β 600 BCE) marks one of the most significant phases in Indian history. It is primarily divided into two phases:
- Early Vedic Period (1500 BCE β 1000 BCE) β Associated with the Rigveda.
- Later Vedic Period (1000 BCE β 600 BCE) β Marked by the composition of Yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda.
This era saw the emergence of Aryan culture, early political structures, social hierarchies, religious beliefs, and economic transformations that shaped later Indian civilization.
Political System
- The Early Vedic period had a tribal system led by a chief called Rajan.
- Sabha and Samiti were the main governing assemblies.
- The Later Vedic period saw the rise of monarchical states (Janapadas & Mahajanapadas), reducing the role of tribal assemblies.
Society & Caste System
- Society was initially egalitarian, but the Varna system (caste-based division) became rigid in the Later Vedic period:
- Brahmins (Priests & Scholars)
- Kshatriyas (Warriors & Rulers)
- Vaishyas (Traders & Agriculturists)
- Shudras (Servants & Laborers)
- Women had a higher status in the Early Vedic period but lost many rights (e.g., education, remarriage) in the Later Vedic period.
Economy
- Agriculture & cattle rearing were primary occupations.
- Trade & barter system flourished, with Nishka (gold ornament) used as currency.
- Iron tools improved farming, especially in the Later Vedic period.
Religion & Literature
- Early Vedic Religion: Nature worship (Indra, Agni, Varuna).
- Later Vedic Religion: Rise of Brahmanical rituals, sacrifices, and worship of Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva.
- Four Vedas (Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, Atharvaveda) were composed, along with Upanishads & Brahmanas.
Decline & Transition
- By 600 BCE, the Vedic society transitioned into Mahajanapadas & early kingdoms.
- The rise of Buddhism & Jainism led to shifts in religious and social systems.
